Bandwidth & QoS

WifiCone lets you control how much bandwidth each customer uses and apply traffic shaping policies to ensure fair usage and consistent performance.

Per-User Bandwidth Limits

Bandwidth limits can be set at two levels:

  1. Rate Profile level — applied to all sessions using that profile
  2. Voucher level — overrides the rate profile for a specific voucher batch

Setting Limits on a Rate Profile

Go to Admin Panel → Rates → [Edit Profile]:

Field Description
Download Limit (Kbps) Max download speed per user. 0 = unlimited.
Upload Limit (Kbps) Max upload speed per user. 0 = unlimited.

Unit reference:

Kbps Mbps
1024 1 Mbps
2048 2 Mbps
5120 5 Mbps
10240 10 Mbps

Setting Limits on a Voucher Batch

When creating vouchers, set Download Limit and Upload Limit fields to override the rate profile's limits for that specific batch. Leave blank to inherit from the rate profile.

Bandwidth Management (Global)

Go to Admin Panel → Bandwidth to set global limits that apply across all users:

Setting Description
Total Download Cap Maximum total download across all active sessions combined
Total Upload Cap Maximum total upload across all active sessions combined
Fair Share Mode When enabled, the total bandwidth is divided equally among all active users

QoS (Quality of Service)

Go to Admin Panel → QoS to configure traffic shaping rules.

QoS ensures that high-priority traffic (e.g., VoIP, DNS) gets preferential treatment over bulk downloads.

Traffic Classes

Class Priority Typical Use
High 1 (highest) DNS, VoIP, control traffic
Normal 2 General web browsing
Bulk 3 (lowest) Downloads, streaming, torrents

Configuring QoS Rules

  1. Go to QoS → Add Rule.
  2. Select the interface (usually your WAN).
  3. Set the upload and download rates for the total connection.
  4. Assign traffic classes with percentage allocations (e.g., High 20%, Normal 60%, Bulk 20%).
  5. Save and apply.

Traffic Graph

Go to Admin Panel → Traffic Graph to see real-time and historical bandwidth usage:

  • Live graph — updates every few seconds
  • Historical view — daily/weekly/monthly totals
  • Per-interface breakdown — see WAN vs. LAN traffic separately

Tips

  • Set bandwidth limits on your cheapest rate profiles to ensure heavier users don't saturate the connection for everyone.
  • Use Fair Share Mode during peak hours to prevent a single user from monopolizing bandwidth.
  • QoS is most effective when you have many users competing for limited bandwidth — less critical on fast connections.
  • Monitor the Traffic Graph regularly to identify peak usage times and plan your rates accordingly.
